Two fields of concentric rings with different centres, combined with exclusive-or: where the rings agree the cell is empty, where they disagree it is filled. The rings are computed in screen pixels rather than in cells, so they stay round inside the twelve-by-twenty grid of the font. A study that started from dither and ended up as the method behind overstrike.
